Ms. Mary Delia Foy Estes, 76, of Eufaula, Alabama died Monday, June 16, after a long illness. Per her request there will not be a funeral service. Born on September 14, 1948, to Humphrey and Elizabeth Johnson Foy, Delia grew up in Eufaula. She graduated from Huntingdon College in 1970 with a BA in English and later from the University of Alabama with a Master's in Social Work. Delia lived most of her adult life in Washington, DC, and Decatur, GA, moving back to Eufaula in 2007. She spent her career working selflessly with marginalized individuals and those in need- homeless teens, prisoners, and patients in Hospice. She had an intellectually bright mind, a wicked wit, and a great gift for telling stories. Delia was a voracious reader, a lover of music, and was devoted to her pets and many friends. In her later life, she developed a love of sailing and became an avid boater. She was preceded in death by her parents, her beloved brother Bill Foy, and her husband James Michael Estes, who was the love of her life. She is survived by her stepdaughter Margaret Estes Baugh and her family, many cousins, and a large group of friends. Donations in her memory may be made to Humane World for Animals (formerly Humane Shelter), humaneworld.org.
