David Nix Obituary

David Nix, a lifelong public servant, devoted husband, father, grandfather, and man of unwavering faith, passed away peacefully on February 21, 2026. Born to George Culver and Jennie Lou Nix on July 4, 1941, David graduated from Clayton High School in 1960 and attended both Auburn University and Troy State College.

David began his professional career working for Bracewell Estes Wood Company and later became a partner in Bracewell Nix Trucking Company. In June 1971, he was appointed Circuit Clerk of Barbour County, filling the unexpired term of his late father-in-law, James Teal, who had faithfully served in that role for 24 years. David was elected to his first full term in 1976 and went on to serve the citizens of Barbour County for an extraordinary 47 years, running unopposed in all but two elections. In every contested election, he carried every precinct—an achievement believed to be unmatched in modern county history. At the time of his retirement, he was the longest-serving Circuit Clerk in the State of Alabama.

Throughout his distinguished career, David served under numerous Circuit Judges, including Jack Wallace, Sr., Bill Robertson, Tommy Gaither, and Burt Smithart, and District Judges Fate Calton, Bill Robertson, Jack Wallace, Jr., Tommy Gaither, Robert Bowden, Charlie Hart, and Matt Horne. His professionalism, integrity, and steady leadership earned him deep respect across Alabama’s judicial community. He was also a proud member of the Alabama Association of District and Circuit Court Clerks.

David honorably served his country in the Alabama Army National Guard, retiring as a Sergeant First Class after 23 years of dedicated service.

His commitment to community extended beyond his professional life. He served as President of the Clayton Civitan Club, President of the local Woodmen of the World chapter, and Chairman of the Lakeside School Board. He was also elected by the Kiwanis Club of Eufaula as the 2018 Citizen of the Year.

Above all, David was a deeply faithful man and spiritual leader. He loved the Lord and served Him faithfully in every area of his life. He was committed to praying daily—often multiple times each day—for the sick, the grieving, and those in need. He served as a Royal Ambassadors leader at Clayton Baptist Church and faithfully served as a Deacon and Scribe at First Baptist Church of Eufaula. He taught Sunday School for over 30 years and dearly loved his men’s Sunday School class and his Tuesday morning Bible study, where he treasured fellowship with both longtime and new friends.

David was a devoted husband of 56 years to his beloved wife, Jane Teal Nix. He was a loving and proud father to Shannon Nix (Todd) Palmer, Meg Nix (Barrett) Chaffin, and Kathryn Nix (Chris) Green.

His greatest joy was his family, and he was a proud grandfather to Carson, Mason, and Harrison Palmer; Libby and Mary Miles Chaffin; and Emerson and Will Green.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bill and Jennie Lou Nix, and his brothers and sisters, George, Ronald, Paul, Virginia, Biliray, and Faye.

David will be remembered as a man of unwavering integrity, quiet strength, humble leadership, and steadfast faith. His life was marked by service—to his country, his community, his church, and his family—and his legacy will live on in the countless lives he touched.
