David Barrows Obituary

David Wayne Barrows died peacefully on Friday, February 28th at his home.

A Funeral Mass will be held Saturday, March 8, 2025, at 11 A.M., at Holy Redeemer Catholic Church in Eufaula, Alabama with Father David Shoemaker officiating.  Interment will be in Fort Mitchell Military Cemetery, in Seale, Alabama with Chapman Funeral Home directing.  The visitation will be held prior to the service from 10 A.M. until service time at the church. 

David was born on December 7, 1941 in Detroit, Michigan.  He received both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees from the University of Detroit.  Additional post graduate study was completed at Wayne State University in Detroit.

He served as an U.S. Army Division Staff Officer, 7th Infantry Division in post war Korea and as Battery Commander, 4th Artillery Bn, 5th Infantry Division, Mechanized at Ft. Carson Colorado. After completing military service, he worked as a junior high school math and history teacher and high school counselor in the East Detroit Michigan Public Schools.  He also served as President of the East Detroit Federation of Teachers. Later, he was Director of Personnel and Labor Relations for the Clarksville-Montgomery County School System in Clarksville, Tennessee.

Subsequently, he was employed by the Mead Corporation for more than twenty years serving in several management positions in Ohio, Iowa, Georgia and Alabama. He retired in 2000 as Human Resources Director for the Mead Corporation, Mahrt Paper Mill in Cottonton, AL. He was a member of The Paper Industry Management Association.

 Since moving to Eufaula in 1990, he has served as President of the Humane Society of Barbour County, Vice President of the Eufaula Country Club, and as a member of the Holy Redeemer Parish Council and the Parish Financial Council.  He is a Life Member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Post 5850.

Survivors include his wife of 46 years, Mary, of Eufaula, Alabama; a twin sister, Diane Sullivan of Fairview, Texas; one daughter and son-in-law, Jane Ellen Nugent (Kevin) and three grandchildren, Peyton Kevin, Daniel David, and Victoria Frances all of Grosse Pointe Farms, Michigan.  

David was preceded in death by his father, Gaylord Wayne Barrows; his mother, Mary Frances Barrows; his brother-in-law, J. Michael Sullivan. 

In lieu of flowers, a memorial donation may be made to the Southern Care Hospice Services or Holy Redeemer Catholic Church.
