Billy Gene Cantley, Sr., a beloved husband, father, brother, grandfather, and friend, passed away on October 15, 2024, in Eufaula, Alabama, at the age of 81. He was born on April 7, 1943, in Charleston, South Carolina, and dedicated his life to his family, friends, and the church. After serving in the army, Gene settled in Eufaula. Gene married the love of his life, Kathy Gilmore Cantley, in 1968.
Known affectionately as "Uncle Jed," Gene spent his career at Mead Coated Board, where he served as a Tour Foreman on the #1 Paper Machine. However, his true passion was carpentry. A skilled craftsman, he had the remarkable ability to build anything, from furniture to the very house where his family still resides. He even sacrificed the tip of his middle finger to the hobby, leading Tara on a successful search to retrieve it.
Gene had a love for the outdoors; he enjoyed gardening, and his family fondly recalls his tall tales about his fishing and hunting adventures that always included a can of Grizzly Wintergreen Tobacco pouches.
He leaves behind a legacy of love, laughter, and resilience. Gene had a knack for giving everyone a good nickname and always found something to tease you about, but you could count on him to do anything for you. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but we take comfort in knowing he is having a grand celebration with Jesus.
Funeral services will be held Saturday, October 19, 2024, at 10 A.M., at Chapman Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Steve Smith officiating.
