Alice Shoemaker Obituary

Alice Kay Shoemaker, 80, of Eufaula, Alabama, passed away on Thursday, February 13, 2025, at her residence in Eufaula. Born July 13, 1944, in Troy, Alabama, she was the daughter of the late K.T. and Sadie Mavis Murphy Ward.  A memorial service will be held on Sunday, February 16, 2025, at 3 P.M. at First United Methodist Church with Rev. Matt Avera with officiating and Chapman Funeral Home of Eufaula directing. The visitation will be held prior to the service from 1 P.M. until the service.  

Mrs. Shoemaker graduated high school from Charles Henderson High School, Troy, AL in 1962, graduated college from Troy State University with her BS in Education in 1966 and then graduated with her master’s in library science from Auburn University in 1987. She attended church at First United Methodist Church in Eufaula, AL where she was an active member.  She served on the CARE Team and various other volunteer services throughout the years. Her heart truly reflected the heart of Christ as she exemplified a servant’s heart. She had unwavering love for her family and friends, as they were at the very core of her existence.

Alice Kay Shoemaker and her husband Coach Johnny Shoemaker embodied the spirit of The Lakeside School.  Alice Kay served beyond the classroom and her library.  She touched countless lives throughout her tenure over the span of nearly 50 years.  She emulated loyalty and service and selflessness to her students, coworkers, and community.  She poured her heart and soul into The Lakeside School as it held a dear place in her heart.

In addition to teaching at The Lakeside School, she previously taught night classes at Sparks State Community College.  She also taught several years where she influenced many young lives at Fort Rucker Elementary School, New Brockton Elementary School, Enterprise Jr High School, Crenshaw Christian Academy, and Georgetown Elementary School. She was preceded in death by her husband Coach Johnny Shoemaker.

She is survived by her sons Matt (Gina) Shoemaker and Mark (Michelle) Shoemaker; grandchildren McKenzie Shoemaker, Grayson Shoemaker, Addie Shoemaker, Jackson Shoemaker, Zach (Taylor) Borden, Jake (Maddison) Borden, and Hunter Borden; great grandchild Lawson Borden.
